Better Sewing Habits You Should Adopt

The truth is that your sewing habits can either make or break a successful project. Therefore, it is necessary to develop good habits that can enhance your results. Although bad habits can seem to be quite rewarding at the start, they can affect your long-term success. Developing good habits does not have to be difficult. However, to replace one behavior with another, you need to be aware of how you like to sew. Start by taking small steps and work on one habit per time.

Balance Tension

sewing machineSometimes, sewers have to drag a garment through the needle and feed dogs to get a smooth, pucker-free seam. Another thing to do is to move the delicate fabric through the machine without the need of sagging. Unfortunately, that can have a negative effect and create other issues. When you override the feed dogs, you can bend or even break the needles and damage the sewing machine’s timing. You can eliminate puckers by adjusting the machine’s tension setting and using the correct size thread and needle.

Fit as You Go

You do not have to wait until a garment is complete to check whether the fit results in the extra work, particularly if you need to rip out the finished seams to get the correct fit. It is a good idea to try on the garment at various points during the construction to find whether the check is fit or not and refine it. You will find that pin-fitting along the process is easy and can save you a lot of time.

Increase Stitch Length

When you place the tension on the garment’s cloth, the thread can break. You should note that it takes quite long to sew a seam that has short stitches, and it is difficult to remove.

Choose Right Fabrics

The truth is that your project can fail even before starting if you do not take into account the characteristics of the fabric you want to use as far as choosing a pattern is concerned. In such a case, chances of the project failing are high if you are dealing with a challenging design and working with difficult or unfamiliar fabric.

Ensure you begin your project in the right setting. Get the right fabric that is recommended for the pattern. If you are selected a difficult fabric, ensure you choose an easy design.…
