Rapid Composting
RAPID COMPOSTING METHOD
5 BASIC PRINCIPLES THAT ARE CRITICAL
1. Size of material being composted can be no larger than 11/2 inches. The more woody the material the smaller
2. Minimum size of pile - no smaller than 1 cubic yard. 36" x 36" x 36".
3. Carbon / nitrogen ratio = 30/1
This equals 1/2 fresh green waste and 1/2 naturally dried waste, cardboard, paper, milk cartons etc.
4. Moisture of pile must be at 45- 65%
If it is too wet it won't decompose.
5. Turn Pile - aerates and cools
. Easiest way to do this is to have 2 piles . Have slated fronts
Advantages
1. Speed
2. Kills all disease producing organisms
3. kills most weed seeds
4. no insects
5. Good exercise
6. Joy
Problems: If it doesn't heat up
1. Too much water
2. Not enough air
3. Not enough nitrogen
4. Not enough water
